Many people try to find new alternatives to anticipate the exhaustion of fossil fuels. Joule Unlimited, an American company specializing in the production of alternative energy claims to have developed a genetically modified microorganism capable of producing diesel and ethanol just by being in contact with sunlight, water and carbon dioxide.
Bill Sims, CEO of Joule Unlimited, describes it to be "revolutionary, " since fuel production will be able to tap into an alternative source. However, some members of the scientific community remain skeptical about the significance of this discovery since it may be difficult to extract. Although researchers claim that these Joule Unlimited cyanobacteria could produce 55,000 liters of diesel per acre, the effectiveness is still unproven.
